What is trauma?
Trauma is the result of situations that cause fear or make you feel unsafe.
Those situations don’t necessarily involve something that happened to you. Witnessing incidents that happened to others can have a significant and traumatic impact on you.
Other forms of trauma may involve you directly, such as war, an accident, physical and mental abuse, and other events that stay with you for long periods.
Trauma can affect our thoughts, bodies, or emotions. We all may react to trauma in different ways.
Current events can trigger past traumatic experiences.
Trauma seems to impact both our bodies and our minds.
Often, sounds and smells can take you back to those incidents, and you relive them even though you try hard not to think about them.
Reactions to trauma cause us to think about these incidents over and over. We might even dream about them; at times, we relive them more viscerally.
Our reactions may also cause anxiety or depression.
Trauma can impact your relationships.
Often, reactions to trauma cause us to either withdraw from our loved ones or react to them with impatience or anger.
Our friends and family may try to help us, but they may not know how. They cannot understand what we are going through.
To protect them from what we have experienced, we avoid talking about it or tell them we are okay. However, your friends and family know something is wrong and feel helpless to do anything for us.
Only healing our trauma will allow us to let those who love us back into our lives.
Overcoming trauma’s influence is possible.
There is hope. No matter the source of your trauma, you can move beyond its influence. You can get over it and feel normal again.
